HOW CAN I HELP?
Laurel Mountain K9 Search & Rescue is continually looking for individuals to come out to trainings and hide for the dogs, having fresh faces is a big benefit in training for the dogs. The team is also on the lookout for large private or club properties for training locations. Our biggest time of need is during hunting seasons and in the winter, places with safe areas to park, easy access to woods, and 70% or more of wooded areas. Unique locations that have buildings and structure access, debris fields, and warehouses are also highly sought. We train at a new location each week; this allows the dogs to become comfortable in new and different environments.

WHATS THE PROCESS TO TRAIN A DOG?
It takes approximately 2 years to train a dog through to certification, once completed then the work really begins. New handlers are offered lots of team supports and resource contacts for training but will need to dedicate additional time for training at home. Maintaining operational status for both ends of the leash and continued training and education will become the forefront for K9 handlers. Many of our members are already working as volunteers or first responders in other fields; fire, ems, ema, dispatcher, county coordinators, risk management.
